Catana Starks, from historically black university Tennessee State, became the first woman ever to coach an all-men’s team at the collegiate level. Through grit and determination, she overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudice from all corners to guide a rag-tag group of golfers to an all-time record championship season.
Bronx native Jaden Miller, 24, could’ve had a better life, but fighting within a prestigious school cost his scholarship and an expulsion. Now a high school dropout working from job to job, evicted with nowhere to call home, he decides to train as a boxer under discredited trainer Duane Taylor. The local PBS station picks up on the story and wants to document Jaden’s progress as he becomes slated to take on the champion, James Burchard, an undefeated boxer of less-than-appealing character. Jaden’s mom, Jada (ailing from a heart condition), sees no good in this, as it was fighting that so far ruined his life, but Duane sees within Jaden an it factor that could make him great.
In small town America, high-school football provides its players a possible ticket to a bigger world. For the community, it’s a source of pride. Filmed in Canton, Ohio, UNDERDOGS focuses on the Knights, a lousy team who’ve become an easy target for jokes. When down on his luck Coach DeAntonio (D.B. Sweeney) arrives, he helps the lovable losers see their true potential, while a hometown bartender (Natalie Imbruglia) helps the coach reopen his guarded heart. When quarterback Bobby Burkett (Logan Huffman) falls in love with a cheerleader (Maddie Hasson) from a rival team, it enrages their star John Handon (Charlie Carver), who has his eye on the same girl. Meanwhile, Bobby’s father (William Mapother) is battling Handon’s dad (Richard Portnow), whose crooked corporation is suing him over an invention he patented. Director Doug Dearth has created a heartwarming and rabble-rousing crowd pleaser, that’s sure to have both young and old on their feet by it’s exhilarating ending.
Bruce Davison (X-Men) leads a group of comedy innovators in the hilarious 108 Stitches. Co-starring two winners of “Last Comic Standing” Josh Blue and Dat Phan as well as Larry Thomas (“Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi”) this College Baseball Romantic Comedy hits a home run. With baseball being the last thing on these player’s minds, and dealing with one of the longest losing streaks in college history, the team of misfits comes to the realization that the school, led by the corrupt and unethical President of the University, has plans to disband the entire program. Hilarity ensues as they have one afternoon to execute a plan to fill the stadium, sign the top recruit on the planet, and help send their coach out with a bang.
